World Bank and KISIP Teams Commend Kilifi County for Successful and Inclusive Implementation of Ongoing Projects

A team from the World Bank, along with the National Project Coordination Team, recently visited Kilifi County for a two-day evaluation of projects under the Second Kenya Informal Settlement Improvement Project (KISIP 2). The visit focused on assessing the progress of key infrastructure projects in Malindi and Kilifi towns, which aim to improve living conditions in the region’s informal settlements.

The evaluation team was led by Ms. Beatriz Eraso Pugo from the World Bank, while the KISIP National Project Coordination Team was headed by Eng. George Arwa. Mr. Abubakar Ali led the County Project Coordination Team, with consultants and contractors involved in various KISIP 2 projects also accompanying the delegation.

Improving Infrastructure in Malindi and Kilifi Towns

The assessment began in Malindi Sub County, where the team visited several ongoing infrastructure projects. These included the construction of new tarmac roads, footpaths, and drainage systems in Muyeye village and Shella Ward. The team also reviewed progress on the installation of on-site sanitation facilities, which are set to benefit 250 households in the area.

In Kibokoni M17E, the team inspected the development of a road that will connect the village to the main Malindi-Garissa highway, alongside other related infrastructure improvements designed to boost connectivity and accessibility.

The evaluation then moved to Kilifi town, where the team reviewed the progress of various ongoing projects, including the tarmacking of roads, installation of water connections, and the development of drainage systems. Additional infrastructure upgrades in Kilifi include the installation of streetlights, high-mast lighting, and business vending platforms—all aimed at improving the town’s overall infrastructure, enhancing safety, and facilitating economic growth.

Positive Progress and Community Impact

The World Bank and KISIP teams expressed their satisfaction with the implementation of the projects and commended Kilifi County for its effective management and progress. The teams acknowledged the cooperation of local residents and praised the efforts of local government officials in ensuring the successful execution of the projects.

In particular, the teams reassured locals that issues such as road blockages and drainage challenges—often exacerbated by heavy rains—will be effectively addressed with the completion of these infrastructure upgrades. The improved drainage and road systems are expected to reduce flooding and enhance mobility during the rainy season.

Gratitude from Beneficiaries

The communities benefiting from the KISIP 2 projects in both Malindi and Kilifi expressed their gratitude to Governor Gideon Maitha Mung’aro’s administration, as well as to the World Bank and the National Government for their support. Many beneficiaries shared that they are optimistic about the improvements to their quality of life, including better sanitation, enhanced connectivity, and safer living conditions.

As the projects continue to progress, they are expected to significantly transform the informal settlements, creating more sustainable, livable environments for Kilifi County residents.

A Bright Future for Kilifi

With the successful implementation of these projects, Kilifi County is set to experience a major boost in infrastructure development. The collaboration between the World Bank, the National Government, and the County Government is a testament to the shared commitment to improving the lives of Kilifi’s residents and ensuring sustainable urban growth.
