H.E. Gideon M. Mung’aro Meets Chery International’s Vice President to Discuss Establishing a Factory in Kilifi
Kilifi County is making waves as a prime destination for investment, with the recent meeting between H.E. Gideon M. Mung’aro, Governor of Kilifi County, and Mr. Chao Qin, Vice President of Chery International, marking a key milestone in the county’s industrial development. The discussion centered on the possibility of opening a Chery Automobile manufacturing facility in Kilifi, a move that would strengthen the county’s position in the East African automotive market.
Chery Automobile Co. LTD has achieved remarkable success in the global automotive industry. Known for its innovative approach, Chery became the first Chinese automobile brand to surpass one million domestic sales. Over the past two decades, the company has built a strong international presence, expanding its operations to more than 80 countries worldwide. With this extensive experience and growth, Chery is now considering Kenya, and specifically Kilifi, as a strategic location for its next manufacturing venture in Africa.
Governor Mung’aro highlighted Kilifi’s unique advantages during the meeting, including the county’s availability of 3,000 acres of land and its proximity to Mombasa Port, one of East Africa’s busiest trade hubs. The port plays a key role in handling car imports from Japan, Europe, and other global markets, making Kilifi an ideal site for a manufacturing plant that could serve both local and regional markets.
The Governor extended a warm invitation to Mr. Chao Qin and the Chery team to visit Kilifi for a detailed feasibility study and to explore the opportunities that the county offers. With Kilifi’s rapid growth and its young, educated workforce, there is great potential for job creation and industrial development, making the region an attractive option for global investors like Chery.
Chery’s interest in Kenya is particularly promising, given the success of its assembly plant in Egypt. The company believes that Kenya, with its strategic location in East Africa and growing economy, offers even greater potential for expansion. During the meeting, H.E. Mung’aro also invited Chery to participate in the upcoming Kilifi International Investment Conference in December, where local and international investors will gather to explore further opportunities in the region.
Governor Mung’aro expressed confidence that within the next three years, Kilifi County will undergo a significant transformation, positioning itself as a hub for industry and innovation in East Africa. The potential establishment of a Chery factory in Kilifi would not only create employment opportunities for the county’s skilled youth but also contribute to the growth of Kenya’s manufacturing sector, aligning with the country’s broader economic goals.
With promising partnerships on the horizon, Kilifi County is rapidly becoming a focal point for investment in East Africa, and this meeting with Chery International represents a crucial step toward unlocking the region’s full economic potential. #BuildKilifi #InvestinKilifi #MungaroDelivers
