Strengthening Urban Development Collaboration in Kenya: Insights from #WUF12Egypt

Kenyan leaders took significant strides at the 12th World Urban Forum (#WUF12) in Eqypt in advancing urban development initiatives across the country.

H.E. Gideon M. Mung’aro, Governor of Kilifi County, joined H.E. James Orengo of Siaya County, H.E. Andrew Mwadime of Taita Taveta County, and Ms. Mary Mwiti, CEO of the Council of Governors, for a key bilateral meeting with the Kenya Country Office of UN-Habitat.

The focus of the discussions was on deepening collaboration between the Council of Governors and UN-Habitat to enhance urban development efforts in Kenya. The leaders outlined several strategies aimed at strengthening urban governance and improving the quality of life in cities and towns across the country

Key Highlights from the Meeting:

1. Strengthening Local Urban Development

The meeting underscored the need to bolster existing municipalities and improve urban management. Kilifi County increased its Municipalities to five to enhance service delivery.  A major outcome was the agreement to form a multi-agency team to oversee the implementation of WUF 12 resolutions at the county level.

2. Collaborative Framework*

Plans were set in motion for the Council of Governors and UN-Habitat to jointly develop a comprehensive framework. This framework will ensure the effective integration of UN-Habitat’s programs and projects with county governments, facilitating smooth coordination and enabling best practices to be shared among counties.

3. Peer Learning and Capacity Building

One of the key components of the collaboration will be fostering peer learning among counties. This approach will allow local governments to share insights, challenges, and successes in implementing urban development programs, ultimately creating more resilient and sustainable cities across Kenya.

Looking Ahead

This strategic partnership promises to enhance urban development in Kenya, providing a roadmap for counties to manage rapid urbanization effectively while promoting sustainable, inclusive growth. The meeting at #WUF12Egypt marked a pivotal moment in Kenya’s urban development journey, with key stakeholders aligning their efforts for impactful change.
